Save the date to join She Builds for its 6th annual 2022 rebuilding day to “make it sow” – spend a day transforming a Bronx lot into a neighborhood garden with classroom space, community gathering spaces and sustainable food. Please join the RTNYC She Builds committee for their sixth annual build day! We will be developing a community garden in the Southeast Bronx.
Why? One in four Bronx residents faces food insecurity, which is 1.7 times greater than the state average, according to a United Hospital Fund and Boston Consulting Group December 2021 report. Children in the Bronx face a higher rate of food insecurity at 1 in 3, according to the report. Statewide, the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the problem.
Developing a community garden is a proven way to help NYC communities create healthy food options that are sustainable. This is steeped in a tradition that was launched in the 1970s - The Community Garden movement began in earnest in the Lower East Side and has since spread across the city providing green spaces open to the public that can also be a source of healthy food.
This impactful day will also support Rebuilding Together NYC’s CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION program that reskills individuals for a family sustaining career in construction.
